Playing in the Mud

Not all learning happens in the classroom. In fact, a lot of learning happens through discovery while having fun.

I found the Grade 2 students outside enjoying art class. It was unusual that they were not wearing their official school uniforms or gym strip. When I looked a little closer, it was easy to see why. They were covered in mud.

The rules from the teachers were to work safely and to work together.  The students were left to come up with the rest of their building goals together. They decided to work in smaller groups, but the final product had to be all connected so that the completed work was one piece of art.

The students used shovels, wooden scoops, and everyday objects to work in the mud.

Buckets and water are necessary when working with mud!

Learning 21st Century skills involves building communication, cooperation, creativity and critical thinking. This lesson covered three of those skills well. The students had to work in groups to complete their sections of the creation.

One of Nagisa's goals is to have the students experience nature first-hand and feel their environment.

Discoveries are bound to happen along the way!

Learning is always fun when there is mud!
